How does direct billing work?

We will ask for you to provide us with your policy number and ID that can be found on your insurance pocket card and complete some simple paper work. We submit the claim through a web portal. If the service isn't fully covered, you will be required to pay the remaining portion.

Are you able to check what my coverage is?

We are able to check your coverage once we have you set up in our system as a patient. Unfortunately, we are unable to do this prior to your first appointment. If you have specific questions about your coverage, we recommend that you inquire with your benefits provider directly.

Will I have to pay upfront?

There may be some circumstances where you will may be required to pay upfront, such as:

  • if you are covered for a percentage of the service fees
  • if you are required to pay a deductible before initiating your coverage
  • if you have already reached your coverage limit for the year
Will I receive a receipt if I use direct billing?

Yes, you will receive an electronic receipt from the insurance web portal that details how much money was directly billed to your plan. You will also receive an itemized receipt from Grassroots Naturopathic Medicine for the services rendered .

Can I use direct billing to pre-pay for future appointments?

Unfortunately, direct billing can only be used in real-time at the time of your appointment.

What questions should I ask my insurance provider to better understand my coverage?
  • What is the beginning and end date of my coverage period?
  • What categories of services does my plan cover?
  • Do I have a deductible?
  • What is the maximum amount covered during my coverage period?
  • Up to what amount is covered for each visit? Is this amount percentage based or a flat dollar rate? Is this amount different for initial visits versus follow-up visits?
  • Are labs and diagnostics covered under naturopathic services, or under another category?
  • Do I have coverage for supplements recommended by a naturopathic doctor?
  • Do I have a "health spending account" that can be used to cover the expenses that are not covered under my basic health plan?
