Prep Work For Your Colon Hydrotherapy Appointment

3 DAYS BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT:

  1. DAILY – incorporate fibre into your diet by having an array of fruits, vegetables, beans, lentils, and 2 tbsp. of ground flaxseed, chia seed, or hemp hearts in a smoothie or mixed with fruit, nuts and alternative milk.

  2. If not already taking probiotics, start taking them once a day with food to start rebalancing the good bacteria in the gut.

  3. DAILY – drink a minimum of 2-3 L of water every day, particularly a few days before your colonic, to hydrate the colon if you aren’t already doing so. Sipping an 8-12 ounce glass of water every hour throughout the day is key rather than “chugging” water every few hours. Half your weight in ounces of water is a good place to start.

  4. Please avoid any red meat or white refined foods as these have no fibre and are hard to digest. These foods can interfere with how well the colon releases.

DAY OF COLONIC:

  1. Please do not have anything to drink 2 hours before your colonic.

  2. Your last meal should be at least 2 hours before your colonic. Keep meals light so they are quick and easy to digest. (eg. soups, salads, vegetables, fruit, smoothies). Your colonic will be more comfortable if you avoid a heavy carbohydrate/protein meal.

  3. Rest and Relax – try to reduce stress as much as possible. Give yourself time to get to your appointment as stress plays a huge role in interfering with the body’s ability to digest and eliminate properly. You will have a much more effective experience if you take deep abdominal breaths and relax the body and mind as much as possible.

  4. Please avoid intense workouts such as HOT yoga or boot camp as sweating the day of your colonic may dehydrate you.

POST COLONIC:

  1. Keep your meals light for the rest of the day (eg. soups, salads, vegetables, fruit, smoothies, fish).

  2. Take probiotics in the morning with food, and at night on an empty stomach to replenish the good gut bacteria.

  3. Add liquid chlorophyll to your water (2 tbsp. twice a day) to assist in regenerating new cell growth along colon lining. This product can be purchased at any health food store.

  4. Keep well hydrated and incorporate daily fibre to maintain digestive health. Aim for at least 2 L of water and a minimum of 30 grams of fibre per day.

DAYS IN BETWEEN COLONICS:

  1. Eat a whole foods diet and drink ½ your body weight in ounces of water daily. For example, a 150 lb person should be consuming 75 ounces (or 2.2 litres) of water per day. This will vary depending on your activity level. During your sessions, the colon hydrotherapist will guide you more thoroughly with tailored recommendations.

  2. Do abdominal massage- this will be taught to you in your first session. You can use this at home while lying in bed prior to falling asleep or prior to getting out of bed in the morning, also while sitting on the toilet if you’re having problems eliminating.

  3. Try dry skin brushing, infrared saunas, massage, Epson salt baths or juicing. All are excellent ways of detoxifying the body.

AFTER YOUR COLONICS ARE COMPLETED:

  1. Continue with eating a whole foods diet that is high in fibre and drinking lots of water. Hopefully, this will kick start a lifestyle change now that your colon is clean and healthy.

  2. Take probiotics. It is very important to replenish the colon with healthy bacteria after your series of colonics are done. Eating fermented food is also good for colon health.

  3. Don’t forget about maintenance. It is important to continue to keep the colon clean and moving. As a comparison, think about why you go to the dentist twice a year for promoting long term dental health. Most of us don’t have problems very often, yet we know we need to go twice a year for maintenance. Similarly, for colon hydrotherapy, most patients should try to come in the spring and fall (minimum 4 sessions/season) for maintenance. In addition, these are the most natural seasons for cleansing and detoxifying the body.

ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR COLONIC SESSIONS YOU WILL CONTINUE ON AT HOME WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS WE’VE GIVEN YOU. IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU NEED MORE OR YOU’VE “FALL OFF THE WAGON” WITH YOUR EATING OR LIFESTYLE THEN PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO CALL AND BOOK IN FOR A FEW COLONICS TO HELP GET YOU BACK ON TRACK.

The following is a list of recommended healthy fibre foods and their fibre content. Please aim for a minimum of 30 grams per day, every day for healthy bowel function, but especially 3 days before your colonic if you aren’t already doing so.
