Accelerated Resolution Therapy: A Path Towards Healing

Accelerated Resolution Therapy: A Path Towards Healing

In the world of therapy, we look for approaches that not only work, but those that work well and efficiently. A tool that I have had the privilege to integrate into my practice is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). This short-term, evidence-based therapy is helping clients experience meaningful relief from symptoms tied to trauma, grief, anxiety, and more – and often in just a few sessions.

Whether you’ve tried other forms of therapy before or this is your first time exploring healing, ART offers something uniquely effective.

What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

ART is a form of psychotherapy that uses bilateral eye movements, similar to what happens naturally during REM sleep, to help clients process distressing experiences. What makes ART especially powerful is that it allows for healing without requiring someone to speak in detail about painful memories.

The process is gentle, focused, and often rapid. Clients work through emotions, images, and sensations tied to specific memories or situations, and then learn to replace those images with ones that feel more peaceful, empowering, or resolved.

A Nervous System–Centered Approach

One of the aspects of ART that aligns beautifully with my approach to therapy is its emphasis on regulation of the nervous system.

When we’re holding onto distressing experiences, our bodies often stay in a state of hypervigilance or shutdown. ART allows us to gently bring those memories to the surface while staying grounded and connected to safety in the present. Throughout the process, nervous system regulation, through breathing, grounding techniques, and guided relaxation, is essential. This creates the foundation for deep, lasting change.

ART is not about reliving trauma. It’s about reprocessing it in a way that brings resolution, not reactivation.

My Experience with ART in Practice

In my own clinical work, I’ve used ART successfully with clients navigating a wide range of challenges, including:

  • PTSD & Trauma
  • Grief and loss – including anticipatory grief
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stressful Work Environments
  • Phobias

Time and time again, I’ve witnessed clients describe feeling “lighter,” “more in control,” or simply more at ease in their bodies after just one or two sessions.

Why Clients Are Choosing ART

Clients are increasingly drawn to ART because of its:

  • Efficiency – noticeable changes often occur within 1 to 3 sessions

  • Non-verbal process – no need to rehash painful details

  • Empowering techniques – clients are active participants in their own healing

  • Versatility – useful for trauma, phobias, grief, stress, and more.

Is ART Right for You?

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or curious about a new way forward, ART might be a valuable next step. Whether you’re dealing with a specific event or a general sense of unease, this therapy offers a compassionate, neuroscience-informed path toward clarity and relief.
